The one-line version

Exam Countdown is an exam timetable and countdown app for iPhone, iPad and Android that has helped students count down to their papers, from GCSEs and A-levels to matric finals, since 2014.

Boilerplate

Exam Countdown puts a student’s whole exam season in one place and keeps the next paper in view everywhere they already look: in a colour-coded list, on a month calendar, on Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, and through the final hours before a paper as a Live Activity on iPhone. Every exam gets its own colour and icon, its own reminders, and a countdown that runs to the second. The core app is free, with unlimited exams and no account needed. Exam Countdown is made by Root38, an independent team in the United Kingdom, has been downloaded more than 2.7 million times, and is rated 4.7 from over 29,000 App Store ratings.

What makes it different

The whole season, not just the next paper

Most countdown apps track one date. An exam season is fifteen, in a specific order, with clusters that decide how revision has to be planned. Calendar View and the Next 4 Exams widget are built for that shape rather than for a single big day.

Countdowns where students already look

Six widget types including a countdown that ticks in real time, plus Lock Screen and StandBy sizes and a Live Activity in the final hours before a paper. The app is built to be seen without being opened, which matters when the alternative is another thing to remember to check.

Calm, not gamified

No streaks, no study-hours leaderboard, no nagging. It holds the dates and shows the numbers. For a lot of students, the countdown going down is motivating on its own, and for anyone it is not, the Live Activity can be switched off.

Built for more than one exam system

Exams are named by the student, so the app fits GCSEs, matric, the Leaving Cert or APs without needing a version per country. South African accounts start with prelims, trials, finals and orals ready to use.

Still here after twelve years

Exam Countdown has been on the App Store since 2014, and was rebuilt from the ground up in 2026 by the same independent UK team that makes Event Countdown.

The company

Exam Countdown is built by Root38 Ltd, a company registered in England & Wales: Ben Sheehan on iOS and Hugh Kirke on Android. Two people, one app on both platforms, since 2015.
