How many days until the matric finals?

The 2026 NSC matric finals run from Monday 12 October to Friday 27 November, on the official Department of Basic Education timetable, after prelims in August and September. Your own first paper depends on your subjects, which is why it is worth counting down each paper separately rather than the season as a whole.

The shape of the matric year

Grade 12 is not one exam season, it is four:

June exams: late May into June, before the winter break.
Prelims (trials): late August through September. These set your provisional university admission, so they carry more weight than the name suggests.
NSC finals: 12 October to 27 November in 2026, on the official DBE timetable.
Results: mid January.

Dates move by a week or two between provinces and between the DBE and IEB timetables, so the only number that means anything is the one on your own timetable.

Count down each paper, not the season

"Days until finals" is a single number for something that runs for a month. Once your timetable is out, put every paper in separately with its date and start time. You get:

A month view showing where your papers cluster, which is where the pressure actually is, and almost never where people expect.

If you are in Grade 10 or 11

The same thing applies to June exams and end-of-year finals, and there is a good argument for starting the habit a year or two early: the promotion mark matters, and a Grade 11 who already has a working timetable is not learning the system in the middle of matric.
