How do I put an exam countdown on my Home Screen?

Touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen, then add a widget: on iPhone and iPad tap Edit and Add Widget, and on Android tap Widgets. Search for Exam Countdown and choose a size. The Next Exam widget is free and always shows whichever paper is closest, changing by itself as you work through the season.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen until the icons jiggle.
  2. Tap Edit, then Add Widget (on older versions of iOS, the + at the top left).
  3. Search for Exam Countdown.
  4. Swipe between the sizes, pick one, and tap Add Widget.
  5. Tap Done.

On Android

  1. Touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Find Exam Countdown, then touch and hold the size you want and drag it into place.

Which widget to add

Next Exam is free and needs no setting up. It follows whichever paper is closest and swaps itself over as each one passes. For most people this is the only widget they need.

If you want one pinned to a specific exam, or one that ticks in seconds rather than days, those are the Countdown and Live Countdown widgets, which come with Premium. There is also a large Next 4 Exams tile that shows the week ahead in one go.

On your Lock Screen

Touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customise, tap the area under the clock, and choose Exam Countdown. Lock Screen sizes are a Premium feature.

If it shows up blank

That is almost always iOS being slow to refresh rather than anything being wrong. Open the app once, wait a minute, and check again. The full checklist is in Widget not appearing or showing blank.

Free on iPhone, iPad and Android. Counting down since 2015.
